Why Are Fine Motor Activities Important?

Fine motor skills are a critical part of early childhood development. Strong fine motor skills help kids feed themselves, grasp objects, and master handwriting. Your child will need to practice fine motor skills to master zipping, buttoning, and tying his shoes.

Plus, successfully accomplishing fine motor activities helps kids build self-esteem and confidence. As preschoolers develop a proper pencil grip and master pre-writing strokes, their fine motor skills will grow stronger.

You can help little learners practice their fine motor skills at home with fun activities and printable summer fine motor worksheets too. Keep reading to discover the fine motor skills your littles can practice right at home during the summer months.

What Are 5 Fine Motor Skills You Can Practice At Home?

What do you think of first when you think about practicing fine motor skills? Handwriting is often the first fine motor skill we think of, but it’s not the first way to practice fine motor skills with your little ones. I like to begin with simple tasks your preschooler will find fun during the summer. Check out some of my favorite ideas below.

Using Tweezers

Using tweezers or tongs is a lot of fun for preschoolers! Plus, it’s an easy fine motor activity to set up for parents and teachers. Grab some tweezers and small objects or pom poms for your preschooler to practice grabbing and sorting into cups and bowls.

Sensory bins are an excellent place to begin! The Jumbo Tweezers* from Learning Resources are some of our favorites because their easy to manipulate and come in lots of fun colors. Another favorite is the Learning Resources Fine Motor Tool Set* because it comes with lots of fun tools your preschoolers can explore and build fine motor skills with this summer.

Mastering a Hole Punch

Mastering a hole puncher is tons of fun too. Plus, it’s a great way to keep little hands busy while you work on other chores. Scrap paper and a handheld hole puncher are all you need to make this fine motor activity come to life.

Manipulating Clay

Kneading clay or dough is a good way to help preschoolers build strong muscles in their hands and fingers to make handwriting easier later. Check out some of my Free Printable Summer Fine Motor Mats to help your little learners get creative and have some fun with play dough or modeling clay this season.

Tracing Activities

One of the easiest ways to practice fine motor skills and pre-writing with your preschool learners is to engage in tracing activities. Check out my Summer Tracing Worksheets for Preschoolers featuring seashells, sandcastles, and sailboats.

Dot Marker Worksheets

Dot markers are a whole lot of fun for everyone! They’re easy to use and easy to clean up too. Help your preschool learners build fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination as they direct the markers where they want them to go while completing their own adorable summer fine motor worksheets.

Plus, dot marker activities improve dexterity and build finger strength. My favorite thing about these summer fine motor worksheets is how they will encourage your kids to explore their own creativity as they choose colors and experiment with creating their summer dot marker images.

Tracing Worksheets

Simple activities like tracing lines and shapes can help your child to build strength and coordination in the fingers and hands. The more they practice, the better they’ll be at grasping writing utensils and controlling finger movements. My printable summer fine motor activities include easy tracing worksheets you can use to encourage these skills at home or in the classroom.

Fun Summer Coloring Pages

Coloring pages aren’t just fun, they include lots of important early learning skills practice too. My summer coloring pages make it easy for kids to build concentration and practice fine motor skills at the same time. Coloring these adorable summer fine motor skill activities will help your little learners develop the muscle endurance they’ll need for proper pencil control later.

Hands-On Summer Fine Motor Activities

Looking for hands-on summer fine motor activities you can pair up with these worksheets? You’re in the right place! Discover some of my favorite summer fine motor activities you can use to practice these skills.

Watermelon Counting Preschool Activity

My summer Watermelon Counting Preschool Activity will help your little learners practice early numeracy concepts including number recognition, counting skills, and subitizing.

Preschoolers will count out watermelon seeds and place them with the correct numbers. As they pinch and grab the tiny seeds, they’ll be developing their fine motor skills too.

Bee Art Preschool Activity

I love creating process art with my little learners! Process art gives children a chance to get creative and explore a variety of materials and techniques without worrying about the finished product.

My Bee Art Preschool Activity will give your preschoolers a chance to explore bees through art with colored water and droppers. As preschoolers drop the paint onto their paper, they’ll be building strong finger muscles too.

Bubble Painting Process Art

Another fun process art activity for the summer months is my Bubble Painting activity. It’s filled with opportunities for your kids to build finger strength and dexterity as they explore bubbles and create art with bubble wrap!

Not only is this adorable painting activity a wonderful way to practice fine motor skills that’s perfect for preschoolers but it’s also a great way to learn all about circles in the process.
