Coloring pages are an excellent way to sneak in some early learning practice for preschoolers and kindergartners. And besides, coloring is fun! These free spring-themed pages are a really cute way to introduce a variety of seasonal topics and lessons too.

Here are some ideas for incorporating my free spring coloring pages into your activities for the day.

Learn About Seasons

Transitioning into a new season is a great time to introduce seasons to children. Being able to actually see the transition in nature will help give children a concrete example and help them to remember how seasons change throughout the year.

Talk about spring by comparing this season to winter, summer, and autumn. Discuss the weather in your city during spring and which clothes you may need for this season. Ask children about their favorite season.

Preschoolers will enjoy coloring these fun spring pages as they talk about what they like about the current season. Kindergartners may be able to write a short sentence or two. You can encourage them with the prompt: “I like spring because…” Their answers may surprise you!

Begin Bird Watching

One of my son’s favorite things about Spring is watching all the birds in our yard. These fun printable pages are perfect for preschool bird watchers! Just print these free spring coloring pages and let your children color the birds on the page to match the birds they see in the backyard.

My son’s favorite is the cardinal, so all his birds are colored red. Talk with your kindergartner about which birds they like and why. Practice comparing and contrasting by talking about the similarities and differences between the birds you see. Learn about the birds that are native to your area. Do you know your state bird? It would be fun to learn!

Don’t forget to make some binoculars with your little bird watchers too. Spying birds in the backyard is a lot more fun when you’re looking through your own custom binoculars!

Also, these free spring coloring pages are an excellent way to build important preschool and kindergarten skills.

  • Coloring pages help kids build fine motor skills. Fine motor skills are essential for building the strong finger muscles kids need for handwriting in kindergarten and beyond.
  • These printable pages will also help children to practice concentration. Building concentration helps children to become problem solvers and critical thinkers at an early age by giving them the skills they need to persevere and think things through.
  • Coloring while listening to a lesson is also a great way to help young children and children with attention deficits to retain information by activating the left and right brain as they color/write with their hands and listen.
  • Printable spring-themed pages are also perfect for building hand-eye coordination in young children. Having good hand-eye coordination isn’t just important for playing sports or the piano, it’s also critical for reading and handwriting.
