I can’t even begin to wrap my head around the fact that I have a preschooler and a first grader this year. Where did the time go? And of course because of that, we put together these awesome Color by Sight Word Back to School First Grade Worksheets.
Not only does the little guy love helping me make them, but he also loves coloring them while I read aloud to him. Although if you’ve been around for a while, I’m sure that’s not exactly a surprise.

It’s hard to believe that not too long ago, he was just starting to learn how to read and now he’s reading to me. We joke around alot and tell one another, “You read to me and I’ll read to you.”
I remember when the little guy learned his letter sounds. He was barely two and a half. And by three, he was starting to read a little bit on his own. Each month we received a few new pre-k sight words in our preschool curriculum kits and I’ll never forget the day he read the word jump.
He was so excited and so very proud of himself and rightfully so. After all, reading is hard work.
Somewhere between pre-k and first grade, things change a lot. Little kids go from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” and it’s made a huge difference in our homeschool days.
It used to be that I had to read everything. Every set of instructions. Every read aloud. Everything.
These days, not so much. At this point, we sit down together and take turns reading. He sounds out words and/or asks what they are. Either way, it’s amazing to me how much things have changed in such a short period of time.
These Color by Sight Word Back to School First Grade Worksheets are a wonderful way to practice not only sight words, but also reading skills. By this point, most little kids can read color words on their own. Not only that, but they can also for the most part color neatly within the lines.
Of course, that makes these first grade worksheets a great independent activity for your little kids.
