These wonderful ocean scenes are a great way to practice early learning skills with toddlers and preschoolers. They also make a fun addition to an ocean animal unit study.
Why does coloring matter?
Coloring is an easy way for young learners to practice important early skills while having fun. Here are just a few of the things your little one can learn while coloring these adorable ocean pages.
- Early pre-writing & handwriting skills
- How to Focus and pay attention to details
As they practice gripping the crayon or colored pencils, they will be developing strong finger muscles and proper pencil grip for better handwriting. When they color using straight and curvy lines, preschoolers are actually practicing the motions needed for writing most of the letters in the alphabet.
While they focus on these fun ocean scenes and attend to each detail of sea life on the page, preschoolers are learning to focus their attention and concentrate while they complete a task.

Ocean Stories to Read Together
It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of reading aloud to my children. Is there anything better than snuggling up together with a good book? Here are some of our favorite ocean themed picture books.
- Swimmy* by Leo Lionni. We love this book not only for the beautiful art, but also for the descriptions of different ocean animals. Have you ever heard a jellyfish described as a “colorful medusa?” What about calling a lobster a “water moving machine?”
- The Rainbow Fish* by Marcus Pfister. This classic picture book has a fantastic message about sharing that’s easy for children to comprehend. It’s a great way to help young children learn about empathy and caring for others.
- The Big Book of the Blue* by Yuval Zommer. This is one of my son’s favorites! This picture book encyclopedia of ocean animals divides animals into categories that make sense to little ones like “gills and flippers.” It’s filled with easy to understand facts about the animals under the sea and beautiful ocean scenes perfect for igniting your little ones imagination!
These are stories I hope your little ones enjoy as much as we do. I want to hear all about your ocean themed fun in the comments too.
