Extension Learning Ideas

There are so many ways to extend this activity and make it even more fun! Here are a few of our favorites:

  • Have kids sort the cards by number before they begin: This is a great way to introduce concepts like greater than, less than, and equal to.
  • Use the cards to practice making 10: To do this, have kids clip the correct number of clothespins onto the first number shown. Then, ask them to solve the equation by finding the number that makes 10 when added to the first number. For example, if the card says “8+” they would need to clip two clothespins onto the “8”.
  • Plus one: Have kids clip the number of clothespins that are one more than the number shown on the card. For example, if the card says “3” they would need to clip four clothespins onto the card. This is a great way to introduce the concept of “plus one”.
