Five Senses Preschool Sound Jars Investigation Station
Here’s an awesome Five Senses Preschool Sound Jars Investigation Station that’s incredibly versatile and would work great for a music theme or even for learning about the human body.
We wrapped up Transportation Station last week and of course got started with our Sights & Sounds theme. So exciting! This week, it’s all about the orchestra as we explore musical instruments and our sense of hearing.
The little guy’s favorite activity this week was definitely the Shaker Sounds Investigation Station where we made our own sound jars and had lots of fun experimenting with them.

Five Senses Preschool Sound Jars Investigation Station
Set Up
- Set out different containers with lids (water bottles, spice jars, take out containers, etc.).
- Find small items and place them in individual cups/bowls.
- Encourage children to place some items in a container, close it, then discover what sound it makes.
Big Questions
- What items will make the loudest sound?
- Which one will make the softest sound?
- Which items will fit into the containers?
These types of activities are so much fun. And this was one of the few that baby girl got to play along with too. She loved watching her brother shake and rattle the jars and make all kinds of noise.
The little guy and I made our sound jars together. We talked about what types of materials to add and how they might sound. We decided to try wood buttons, acrylic beads, and a few other things that we found in the studio.
We also put different amounts of the materials in the jars. If you look closely, you can see there are just a few blue acrylic beads, which ended up being really loud. And lots of the pink perler beads, which made a much softer sound. The wooden buttons were of course somewhere in the middle.
It was kinda cool to practice making predictions and then testing them. Way to use the scientific method, right? This activity would be great to do with toddlers or even for a kindergarten science center.
You could use this idea for lesson plans relating to musical instruments just like we did or for teaching little kids about the five senses and the human body. Either way, this curriculum is so versatile and we love that we can totally make it work for us.
