Do your kids love to ask “why?” Mine certainly do! Kids love to ask why the sky is blue, why it rains, and why we can’t go swimming in January.

Children are curious little people! Asking questions about their environment can help them make sense of the world around them. It can take years and thousands of “why” questions for them to develop a complete picture of the world they inhabit.
One way kids can learn to make sense of it all is by teaching them to observe the world around them. What better way to do it than to learn about the weather! After all, looking out your window to notice the sun, clouds, or rain is an excellent way to begin to make observations about the world.
I’ve gathered several fun learning activities for children from toddlers to preschoolers that will help them begin to understand the weather and how it works in an age-appropriate way while sparking learning about our environment and our planet.
You’ll get activities from process art appropriate for even the youngest learners to weather-related letter worksheets that tie in phonics concepts for preschool-aged learners. So, put on your explorer hat and keep scrolling to get started on your journey to understanding weather through fun activities with your little learners.
Exploring Weather Trends
Kids can learn that nature has repeating patterns by observing and tracking seasons. One easy to get little learners involved in making observations about the weather, is to look out the window together.
Take a few minutes each day to observe the weather from your window, or (for extra credit points!) take the time to actually go outside. While you’re doing this, ask your children questions about the weather:
- Is it cloudy? Sunny?
- Does it feel warm? Cold?
- Is that rain I feel?
- Do you feel the wind?
Having these conversations is a great way to begin exploring weather! To focus on trends we can track in weather, talk about the seasons. Ask these questions:
- Can we go swimming when it’s cold out? When do we go swimming?
- When can we build a snowman? What do we use to build a snowman?
- When do the leaves fall from the trees? Is it warm or cool when the leaves fall?

What Causes Weather?
I still remember teaching my little guy about the water cycle. He was fascinated! That week, he told everyone we met all about how and where the rain comes from. I just love watching my children get excited about learning. Don’t you?
Learning about what causes weather can be really exciting! It’s a great way for kids to make sense of different types of weather that might be scary to them in the beginning like thunderstorms or hurricanes.
It is also a fun time to explore weather phenomena that your kids will be fascinated by like snowflakes and rainbows!
