Practice Fine Motor Skills with Little Learners

Coloring is one of the easiest ways to practice fine motor skills with your preschoolers and kindergartners. Not only do little kids love coloring, but it’s a great way to strengthen their finger muscles as well as work on focus, concentration and so much more. After all, handwriting is such an important foundational skill.

These free printable back to school coloring pages are also great for creative thinking and expression.

Provide Opportunities for Sensory Exploration

There are so many creative ways to use these free printable back to school coloring pages.

Mix it up a bit with watercolors or even trace the lines with puffy paint and create some gorgeous three-dimensional artwork. Puffy paint is such a tactile experience for little kids. When it dries, it has the most amazing texture.

Have you ever made sand art with your kids? It’s easy! Spread a thin layer of glue over your picture then sprinkle colored sand. Give it a few minutes and then gently shake off the excess sand.

Back to School Lesson Plan Ideas

Back to School Apple – Apples are a traditional fall theme and perfect for back to school. You can teach little learners about apple picking, Johnny Appleseed, and even make fun apple stamped art. If you’re looking to extend this theme even further, check out my Free Printable Apple Tracing and Apple Letter and Number Worksheets too.

School Days Schoolhouse – How cute this little schoolhouse? This school days coloring page would be a great one for the first day of school. Staple a piece of lined paper to each kiddo’s finished coloring page and have them write a paragraph about what they’re hoping to learn this school year or what they’re looking forward to. What an excellent way to add some creative writing to your first-day lesson plan!

Explore Globe – The little guy and I started off our school year with a study of maps and globes, so I made this adorable coloring page as a tribute to my little explorer. I have every intention of framing this very special piece of artwork in our homeschool room. What a wonderful way to make a quick & easy keepsake!

Make Stuff Art Supplies – This one’s my favorite and another one that I’m considering having the little guy color to make some super cute artwork for the studio. It would also be adorable framed in your classroom art center or near your homeschool craft area. And let’s not forget that you could for sure make a day of using this free coloring page and teaching your little learners all about color mixing.

Download your own free printable back to school coloring pages and start off the brand new school year with lots of creative, fine motor fun!
